Poor in Spirit

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." — Matthew 5:3

An open hand, reaching up. This is the first beatitude, and it's the door to all the others: before comfort, before mercy, before purity of heart, there is this—the admission that we come to God with empty hands.

Poverty of spirit isn't low self-esteem. It's knowing all the way down that we cannot produce our own righteousness, we cannot manufacture our own peace, and we cannot save ourselves by striving harder. It's total helplessness and submission. It's the tax collector who won't lift his eyes.

Above the hand, a crown, held out, not held back. This is the strange math of the kingdom of heaven: the ones who know they have nothing are the ones who receive everything. Not because they earned it, but because the King who owns every crown chose to give it to those who would reach out for it.
