Peace

Peace isn't the absence of the storm.

The story goes that a painter was once asked to express the idea of Peace in a painting. He didn't paint a calm sea or a quiet meadow. He painted a storm—waves, wind, chaos. And in the corner, sheltered in a cleft of rock, a small bird, asleep. Undisturbed. Because it knew something the storm didn't.

That's the image I kept coming back to. Not stillness as the absence of difficulty, but stillness as the presence of something—or Someone—greater than the storm.

The boat isn't equipped to face the waves, but is small and fragile. A paper boat, really. The kind that shouldn't survive. But where the light falls on it, there is no wind, nor rain, nor water. The storm is real—but the light around the boat is even more real. And the light comes from outside the storm, breaking through the clouds and reaching down.

If you've read the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, you may recognize the dark island—the place where dreams come true, including the nightmares. The crew was lost, desperate, and out of options. And the only way out was a total surrender: Lucy calling out Aslan's name with nothing left to offer. In that moment, a light appears on the boat to led them out. "Courage, dear heart," she hears Him whisper.

That's the peace this piece is about. Not the peace of calm waters, but the peace that comes when you've run out of options and discover that was never where your hope was anyway.
